how to implement The BULLY Project in your school
ARE YOU SAFE & INCLUSIVE?
When we started, our primary goal was to educate kids and we aimed our materials at teaching them the lessons of the film. But, we soon realized that we were missing a bigger opportunity to impact the adults in the school community. With the guidance of our partners, we looked for the most effective prevention strategies; we asked ourselves what we could deliver through our schools and communities toolkit that would make a difference.
The outcome of that work was a commitment to an educational reform approach known as Social and Emotional Learning (SEL). SEL is about building trusted relationships within a school; teaching empathy and ensuring that every student, even in a large school, has one adult that they are connected to and can trust when they have a problem. It’s about building student leadership, embracing new types of discipline, and creating public accountability around these issues.
In order to successfully address bullying problems, the entire school must comprise a culture of respect.CASEL
SCHOOLS & COMMUNITIES TOOLKIT
Our Educator’s Toolkit, now mapped to the Australian Curriculum, is built on a suggested framework that can be modified in terms of timing and approach as every school will have its own rhythm and challenges.
YOU are the change agent, whether you are a bus driver, teacher, counsellor, nurse, principal, or a director. We firmly believe that you can lay the groundwork for lasting change. Suggested framework:
Gain support from the full community of adults
Critical to your success will be gaining the support from and informing the full community of adults (administrators, school support staff, teachers etc) to understand the implementation of The BULLY Project.
Watch BULLY
All the staff members and other adults involved, must watch the full length documentary BULLY and be familiar with the version for younger audiences.
Refine your skills and knowledge about bullying and SEL
The Toolkit includes teacher professional learning discussion mapped to AITSL standards as well as a huge amount of tools and resources to assist teachers and parents to become prepared to manage bullying situations, reporting and implementing prevention strategies.
